Consecutive vs non-consecutive Masters degree

Instead of being determined by nationality, the cost of your Master’s degree in Germany will mainly depend on whether it is regarded as a ‘consecutive’ or ‘non-consecutive’ program:

Private universities

The cost of a Masters from a private university in Germany will usually be higher than at a public institution. Private universities are not obliged to waive fees and their degree pricing may not distinguish between consecutive and non-consecutive courses.

Public funding for Masters students in Germany

Various forms of financial support are available to help with the cost of postgraduate study in Germany. These are not necessarily intended to cover tuition fees (which are usually low, if charged at all) but can help you with living costs and other expenses.

1. The DAAD Scholarships

The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst German Academic Exchange Service) is the largest financial aid organization in the world. DAAD also targets other countries besides Germany and even includes special programs such as Artists-in-Berlin, dedicated to students from the field of art. The organization annually supports over 100,000 German and international students and researchers.

In total there are 15 DAAD offices around the world, as well as numerous other administrative centers. This means that DAAD funding for Masters study in Germany is probably available to you, wherever you live.

DAAD United Kingdom – Study Scholarship for Postgraduate Students

DAAD’s London office administers a scholarship for current students of British or Irish universities to study a Masters in Germany. This funding provides up to €8561 per month, as well as coverage for travel expenses.

2.The Deutschlandstipendium

Over 22,500 students benefit from this national program created by the Federal Government of Germany. The program is a partnership between public and private institutions, in order to reward talented students. Through sponsorship from businesses, foundations, private universities, and other institutions plus the government, talented students are awarded 300 EUR/month.

PRIVATE FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP

1.The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is a political foundation that offers financial help to international and German students with grades above average and who show awareness of civil responsibility, mainly showing a social or political involvement. Awarded students can receive up to 1,000 EUR/month, the sum covering enrollment fees, the health insurance, and the monthly required books/study materials.

2. Heinrich Böll Foundation

Heinrich Böll Foundation provides several scholarships to German students as well as international students, including refugees, at all degree levels. However, the foundation mainly awards students who plan to study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), and especially those programs with a focus on Environmental Science.

Other scholarships are dedicated to students who apply to economic, legal studies, journalism, and art degrees.

3. Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Scholarships

International students who plan to study a Master’s or a Ph.D. program in Germany are eligible for Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Scholarships. The award is offered for one year, and one important requirement is for students to have German language skills (level 2 CEFR) even if the degree they apply to is English-taught. Applicants should also meet the 30 years age-limit requirement.

4. Bayer Foundations

Bayer Foundations grants financial support to both students and young professionals from Germany and from abroad that want to pursue a study programme or a research project. The main requirement for students is to prove very good academic results and the project must focus on an innovative topic and approach.

5. Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG)

The German government provides a combination of need-based grants and loans to students at public universities. These are provided under the Federal Training Assistance Act, or Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, commonly abbreviated as BAföG.

The amount of BAföG support you can receive will vary based on your economic circumstances, up to a maximum of €861 per month. Of this, 50% will be given to you as a grant and the remaining 50% will be provided as an interest-free loan (with the total repayable amount capped at €10,010).

You can qualify for BAföG assistance with a Masters in Germany if you’re a German citizen and you:

Are under 35 years old
Are studying a recognised program at a German university
Can demonstrate financial need based on your parents’ income and your own economic circumstances

In order to be eligible for help from BAföG, you’ll usually need to be a German citizen. However, in some certain situations, international students will also qualify. For example, if one of your parents has German citizenship, you have a German spouse or you’ve worked in Germany for five years before the start of your studies, you may be eligible for BAföG.

6. StipendiumPlus Scholarships

Stipendium Plus is a network of twelve funding organizations, coordinated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. They offer a number of awards to gifted students at various levels of study. You’ll usually need to qualify for BAföG to be eligible for a StipendiumPlus scholarship.

Various individual organizations participate in the StipendiumPlus network. Some offer to fund in specific fields or in support of specific social and political agendas. Others have a wider remit and will support students working in a variety of areas.

Humboldt Research Fellowships for Postdoctoral Researchers

Postdoctoral scholarships for scientists and scholars of any subject and nationality. Students from developing and emerging countries may be eligible to apply for a Georg Forster Fellowship.

Kurt Hansen Science Scholarships

Science scholarships to study in Germany, funded by the Bayer Foundation and open to students who are training to become educators in the field of science.
